EMBER™ (MINDFULNESS BASED EMOTIONAL RESILIENCE)
At its core, EMBER teaches students how to skillfully develop the
foundations of resilience: the capacity to bounce back from difficulty
by drawing on inner reserves of calm, clarity, compassion, and
EMBER’s trauma sensitive program has been created specifically for men
and women rebuilding their lives after experiences of trauma. Unlike
traditional therapies that treat trauma with talk-based approaches,
EMBER focuses upon the body, with evidence-based tools and strategies
that skillfully address trauma’s somatic dimension, the overwhelming
physical and emotional sensations that make it so debilitating to
endure. Recent research demonstrates that body-based methods are an
effective adjunct treatment to talk therapy. A combination approach
has been shown to make it more feasible for survivors to successfully
process and integrate overwhelming experiences.
Each session will begin with an identical opening sequence to create a
sense of predictability and set the tone of a welcoming, nonjudgmental
and comfortable environment.
What is Trauma Sensitive Yoga?
A gentle movement practice, trauma-sensitive yoga emphasizes a sense
of somatic safety and a capacity for self-care. At its core is the idea of “reclaiming the body”: strengthening the capacity to
tolerate physical sensation, to feel and respond to the body’s cues
– a capacity that exposure to trauma frequently delays or derails.
Mindfulness Meditation and iRest Yoga Nidra
There is a mindfulness meditation aspect of every EMBER™ class.
iRest Yoga Nidra, developed by the psychologist Richard Miller, iRest
(Integrative Restoration) is a carefully structured practice of
meditative self-inquiry, in which practitioners scan the body, breath,
emotions, and thoughts, exploring patterns and contrasts, learning to
welcome whatever they find. Through this deeply restful guided
practice, practitioners hone the capacity to differentiate – and
ultimately integrate – the many tangled sensations, memories,
feelings, and beliefs through which trauma has hijacked their body and
