I have a wise, gentle, saging soul friend in my life who is also a gifted spiritual director. She came to visit me one day at Circle P and had a very low-key, spontaneous experience with Markus while sitting bareback on him in the empty indoor arena. After standing very still and quiet for a while she asked to be led around the indoor arena at a walk. Nothing obvious or remarkable “happened” in those moments together except maybe Markus’ extreme care to do whatever he could to help her feel balanced while riding him. Neither one of us was aware of the deep effect this simple encounter with Markus would have on her.
I didn’t think anything of it until just recently when she opened up and shared with me for the first time that she had been sexually abused as a child. She then went on to say how surprised she was to experience such powerful healing in her body, mind, and spirit after her brief, gentle encounter with Markus.
I cried tears of awe as I listened to her sacred story, deeply touched to have a keener knowing of why she has been so very supportive of the work I feel called to with women who have experienced sexual trauma and abuse.
Now, I could explain away her experience with scientific knowledge I have gained about how the brain can actually be healed of traumatic, somatic memory and why horses are such great partners for this healing work. But I think I’ll just let the mystic in me leave it at this: “God works in mysterious ways, His wonders to perform.” Especially when I get out of God’s way and it’s through the Way of the Horse!
About Markus the Horse
My name is Mighty Markus – just Markus between friends! I know, I know. I look just like a big teddy bear. But how many teddy bears do you know that love bananas? My broad, sturdy back has helped so many children learn how to find their seat and balance while riding a horse. And more than one person, little and big, has shed a tear or prayed a prayer in secret against my willing, soft neck. I’ve even anticipated seizures in a rider every now and then over the years, refusing to move until they were dismounted.
These days I am retired from my therapeutic riding career and love to companion women on their journey of spiritual growth and healing. My human partner, Beckie, always says that I am her best teacher and have made her a better partner for humans AND horses!
