Interview By Michelle Gatchell ~
Getting a Mani/Pedi is something women and men do for self-care. Those that partake know it is a true art form to paint someone’s nails. Your hands are one of the most exposed parts of your body; encountering dirt, bacteria and the weather. Your feet also get exposure to those things, plus they get a work out being walked on day after day, so taking care of both your hands and feet is important. When you have your nails done, it usually includes an exfoliation, then lotions to care for the skin, ending with polish or gel on the nails. Mani/Pedi’s can make you feel better in general, because your nails look great. But there is also a physical bonus when you exfoliate your feet, it brings them back to their natural weight bearing balance. All these things are good reasons to get a mani/pedi, but one salon called The W Nail Bar is adding another reason to have your nails done. (As if we needed one.) They are sending all their employees to reflexology training with All Life Community member, Jayne Bennett. When I heard about this, I wanted to find out more.
I first talked to ALC member Jayne Bennett about her business.
Q. Jayne how long have you been doing reflexology?
Jayne : For nearly 30 years.
Q. How long have you been training people in reflexology?
Jayne: 15 years, 10 within the UK and Europe and the last five years within the USA. I am an accredited trainer with the American Reflexology Certification Board(ARCB.)
Q. You are from England, is reflexology a part of nail care service there?
Jayne: Yes, in fact it is part of the Nation’s health service, so you will see Reflexology added to many services. It’s a match made in heaven!
Q. Jayne how did this training idea come about?
Jayne: The owners of The W Nail Bar are very forward thinking dynamic ladies and love the benefits of Reflexology. I work on them once a month and we were talking about how great it would be to add a service that would give their clients added health benefits on top of an already relaxing manicure or pedicure. In Europe and the UK, you will often see Reflexology offered. They realize the difference it can make to the over-all wellbeing of clients.
Q. How will reflexology add to The W Nail Bar’s services?
Jayne: To start with it will be an add on to their current manicure and pedicure menu.
Q. What types of things will you be teaching the manicurists?
Jayne: A Manicure, Pedicure Reflexology Certificate, how to do a 15- or 30-minute treatment within their services, the principles and history of reflexology, relaxation techniques and hands-on practice on feet and hands. When we are done they will feel confident to add this wonderful service.
Note: The Manicure, Pedicure Reflexology Certificate is 50 credit hours approved by ARCB, completed in a 4-day course.
Q. Jayne if someone would like to make an appointment with you or talk to you about training how can they connect with you?
Jayne: I would love to help. Here is my contact information.
Q. Anything else you would like to add?
Jayne: The Manicure, Pedicure industry is so perfect for adding the wonderful benefits of Reflexology, it will bring your experience to the next level! Reflexology can relax you and bring your body back to balance and harmony. It feels like your body has received a treatment from the inside out. It can aid in digestive issues, hormonal issues, headaches, anxiety, stress, pain, sinus, infertility and so much more. It’s fantastic for everyone to experience of all ages.
For those that do not know of The W Nail Bars. There are currently two locations, one in the Short North area of Columbus and one in the Polaris area, located in the DSW. Another is set to open soon in German Village. The website for The W says that the W stands for WE and that they want to create a community around the nail bars where you become part of the family once you arrive. They want you to relax and let go of things that are worrying or distracting you from being your naturally free self. Two women started The W and I wanted to find out what inspired them to add reflexology as a service.
What inspired you to train your employees in Reflexology?
Answer: We get Reflexology with Jayne once a month and it has been life changing. We knew if we could offer something like this to our own guests they would love it!
Q. What feeling do you want your customers to walk away with?
Answer: Relaxed and educated about the benefits of this practice.
Q. What makes your store different?
Answer: All our products that are sold and used are green and chemical & paraben free. We make everything in-house, there is no outsourcing. We make the lotions, scrubs, cuticle oils, you name it. We even have our own polish line. The only outside polishes used are OPI and our gel lines.
Q. I read that you carry vegan products, what stores carry vegan nail products?
Answer: All our locations have vegan products. We are vegan ourselves, so this is very important to us.
Q. Where can someone get more information about The W Nail Bar?
Answer: Visit our website at http://www.thewnailbar.com/
I really enjoyed learning about how The W is upping their game to provide services that can help their clients health and wellbeing on a new level. I know I treat myself to a manicure when I need a pick-me-up. I can’t wait to add in reflexology to my next visit. Thank you to Jayne Bennett and the owners of The W Nail Bar for sharing your story with the All Life Community.
